The eight clusters of the loop
Stop 1: Welcome Center, 167 San Marco Ave. Free parking for trolley ticket holders. This is where most visitors board. Gift shop, restrooms, information.
Stop 2: Old Jail & History Museum. The Old Jail (built 1790, onsite tours) and the St. Augustine History Museum (museum entry included with your $40 ticket). Spend 30–60 minutes here if you want to go inside.
Stop 3: Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. A 45-acre park with living history exhibits, the Native American village reconstruction, and the Fountain itself. Most trolley riders skip it or do a quick 15-minute walk; it is worth a longer visit if you have time.
Stop 4: Mission Nombre de Dios. The site of the first mission in the continental US, established 1565. A small shrine, a 208-foot cross visible from the trolley, and a quiet plaza.
Stop 5: Castillo de San Marcos. The star attraction. Built in the late 1600s of coquina stone (a local shell rock). A National Monument. Entry is not included in the trolley ticket; plan on a separate admission fee if you want to go inside. Most trolley visitors stop here for 30 minutes to 2 hours of exploration.
Stop 6: City Gates & St. George Street. The entrance to the colonial pedestrian street. Shops, restaurants, galleries, and old colonial buildings. This is the commercial heart of the tour. Most visitors hop off here and spend 1–2 hours walking the street, eating, and shopping.
Stop 7: Plaza de la Constitución & Cathedral. The main plaza in the heart of downtown, lined with colonial buildings. The Cathedral of St. Augustine sits on the north side. A good place to rest, have a drink, and watch people.
Stop 8: Flagler College & Lightner Museum. The two grand Gilded-Age hotels built by Henry Flagler in the 1880s, now a college and museum. Impressive architecture, free to walk around the courtyards and exteriors. Museum entry is separate and not included in the trolley ticket.
Which stops to prioritize
If you have one day, do this: Start at Welcome Center (free parking, Stop 1). Ride the full loop once to get your bearings and listen to the conductor’s narration. Hop off at the Castillo (Stop 5) for 45 minutes to 2 hours. Catch the next trolley to Stop 6 (St. George Street) and explore for 1–2 hours. That covers the two marquee stops. If you have extra time, ride the Beach Bus (free) to the lighthouse and beach. You have seen the core in one day.
The free Beach Bus loop
Included with your trolley ticket is the free Beach Bus, a separate shuttle run by Old Town Trolley to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and St. Augustine Beach. Board at any trolley stop or the Welcome Center. It is a 15–20 minute ride from downtown. The main loop does not serve the beach or lighthouse; this bus does.
A conductor’s trick: ride at 9 a.m. or 3:30 p.m.
The crowd hits between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., especially March to May and October to November. If you ride at 9 a.m. (the first full loop), you get open seats, shorter waits at stops, and a more relaxed conductor. 3:30 p.m. is also quiet and the light is good for photos. Ride then instead of midday.
