Pick a stop, board, ride
The trolley loop has 22 stops spread through downtown St. Augustine and the historic district. The main hub is the Welcome Center at 167 San Marco Ave (Stop 1), where there is free parking and a gift shop. But you can board at any stop: the Castillo de San Marcos (Stop 5), St. George Street (Stop 6), Plaza de la Constitución (Stop 7), Flagler College (Stop 8), the Old Jail (Stop 2). Show up with your ticket, board the next trolley, and take a seat. No line, no reservation needed. If a trolley is full, wait 15–20 minutes for the next one.
The full loop is ~90 minutes of live narration
If you board and ride the trolley without hopping off, the full narrated loop takes about 90 minutes. The conductor (a live driver-narrator, not a recording) talks through 100+ points of interest: the Castillo, St. George Street shops, Flagler College, the Cathedral, the Fountain of Youth, and more. Some conductors are funnier than others. The narration is always informative.
Re-board all day
One $40 ticket is good all day. Ride the full loop, hop off at a stop to explore, and board the next trolley when you are ready. No new ticket needed. I have seen visitors ride the full loop in the morning, hop off at St. George Street for two hours of shopping, catch a trolley back to the Welcome Center, then ride the Beach Bus to the lighthouse. It is all included.
A busload reality: waits at peak stops
The trolley is a loop, not a taxi. At busy stops—especially the Castillo, St. George Street, and the Plaza—you can wait 15–25 minutes for a trolley with free seats. If you just missed one, the next trolley takes 15–20 minutes. This is not a problem if you plan for it. Do not expect to step out of your hotel and into a trolley on the spot at 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday in March. But if you hop off early (9 a.m.) or late (3 p.m.), you will find open seats faster.
Open trolleys in July and August
Some trolleys are open-sided (no glass, no air conditioning). June to August in Florida is hot and humid. Morning rides (9–11 a.m.) and late-afternoon rides (3–4:30 p.m.) are cooler. Midday trolleys in July can be uncomfortable. Wear sunscreen and bring water.
The step down is high
The trolley car sits high off the ground. Getting down is an 18–24 inch step (roughly knee height). It is not a problem for most people, but if you have knee, hip, or balance issues, ask a conductor to help or consider the golf cart tour instead.
Free Beach Bus included
The Beach Bus is a free shuttle for trolley ticket holders. It runs to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and the beach. Board at any trolley stop or the Welcome Center. It is the same color trolley, a different route, and it is already paid for in your ticket.
