The Welcome Center free lot: the play

When you buy a trolley ticket ($40), you are entitled to free parking at the Welcome Center lot at 167 San Marco Ave. This lot serves the Welcome Center (where the gift shop, restrooms, and information desk are) and the main trolley hub (Stop 1). It is a real parking lot, paved, clean, and staffed. Arrive by 9 a.m. and you will have a spot. This is the single best move in St. Augustine: free parking, and the trolley loop starts right there.

Downtown paid parking: garage and street

If you cannot use the Welcome Center lot (full, or you want to stay downtown longer), downtown has two paid options: the Historic Downtown Parking Facility (a garage near the Visitor Information Center) and street parking (metered, fills by 10 a.m. in peak season March–May). Neither is cheap. The garage is convenient but expensive. Street parking is cheaper if you get a spot, but you are hunting. Park at Welcome Center and avoid the stress.

Street parking workaround (if brave)

Park on a side street one block east or west of the main commercial strip (St. George Street, the Plaza). These streets fill later and are still metered, but you might find a spot at 10:30 a.m. and avoid the garage. It is a gamble. The Welcome Center lot is not a gamble.

Hotel parking: check before booking

Some hotels offer free parking, some charge nightly, some do not have parking (you have to use a garage). Check your hotel’s parking policy before booking. If your hotel charges for parking and you plan to rent a car, add that cost to your trip budget.

The park-once philosophy

My philosophy: park free at Welcome Center, ride the trolley loop (~90 min), hop off to walk the walkable core (Castillo, St. George Street, Plaza), ride the free Beach Bus to the lighthouse. You never move your car. You visit the core sights, and by 4:30 p.m. you are ready to eat dinner or rest. Parking is solved. Do not overthink it.
